Thoracic Cavity Diagram. The thoracic cavity with air tight pleural cavities having lungs is a basket or box like structure formed dorsally by the vertebral column ventrally by the sternum and by the ribs on the sides. Here in the diagram i tried to show you all the cavities from the animal body as a whole.

All the cavities are well separated from each other and possess a distinct boundary. This diagram shows that the ductus arteriosus connects the pulmonary artery to the aorta and diverts blood that would otherwise go to the lungs. The thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity are separated by the diaphragm.

The apical portion of each pleural sac extends through the thoracic inlet into the base of the neck forming pleural lined pockets known as cupula.

The thoracic spine sits between the cervical spine in the neck and the lumbar spine in the lower back. Note the how spongy the tissue is.
