The sh 101 needs several different internal voltage rails so the roland engineers designed a small step up transformer circuit where the 9v dc from the battery or the 9 12v dc from the mains adaptor is first turned into ac and boosted through a tiny transformer that you can see in the above photos which generates a higher ac voltage that is then rectified back to.
