The purpose is the exact same. The new 24 pin connector added one line apiece for ground 33 5 and 12 volts. Remove the 4 wire range cord and install the replacement 3 wire range cord.
The 24 pin connector is polarized so it can only be plugged in pointing in the correct direction.
