Cell theory has its origins in seventeenth century microscopy observations but it was nearly two hundred years before a complete cell membrane theory was developed to explain what separates cells from the outside world. Hooke first described cells in 1665. Consequently he named these rooms as cells.

Early observations the invention of the microscope allowed the first view of cells.

By the 19th century it was accepted that some form of semi permeable barrier must exist around a cell. These are the types of cells we find in plants and animals. 1825 french scientist francoise raspail established one of the concepts of cell theory. However his compound microscope had limited magnification and hence he could not see any details in the structure.
