Many trailers have three circuits. Check with a test light or vom. Lighter duty trailer no brakes use a 4 pin connector.

7 pin flat the best. Various styles of connectors are available with four to seven pins to allow transfer of power for the lighting as well as auxiliary functions such as electric trailer brake control backup lights etc. All diagrams are as viewed from the cable side. This has now been replaced by 13 pin euro plugs on.
